Foto Friday – I HDR, Do you? Part 2

ice-hdr-xtra-1000x750

As many of you remember from my first post about HDR or high dynamic range photography, these type of images can really spice up your digital scrapbook layouts and your photography.  And they are so easy to get cool results.  I have to admit I really don’t know what I’m doing – just visually playing around but I am loving the results.  A quick recap: I am photographing 3 separate exposures at normal, +2 f/stops and –2 f/stops.  I then open the pictures in Photomatix Pro
(affiliate link) and letting the creative juices flow.  Here’s the latest batch of pictures:

Would you like a tutorial on how to do these type of pictures?  Leave a comment and if there is enough interest I’ll try a series of video tutorials.

    Very nice job, Stan – as always! Love the house shots, but also really like the ice on the rock (?). I have both Photomatix & the Topaz bundle … finding I like the results with Topaz Adjust4′s HDR as much or more than Photomatix, and a sometimes easier to use. But then I also worry about over-processing — or the description I read, calling processing-heavy folks, “photoshopographers” … LOL. I think Topaz tends to have a very telling, distinctive look and requires a “light hand” in application – you did a nice job. Some I have seen looks too … too. Have to say I like the first Topaz HDR version you did the best.

    Stan – if you get a chance, take a look at these (HDR landscapes): http://www.smashingdownloads.com/2009/06/04/27-brilliant-examples-of-landscape-photography/

    They’re all pretty interesting to look at, but truly, I find some of them so over-done that they look almost cartoonish. What do you think? Just my opinion. Having a hard time deciding what the correct level of HDR-ishness really works – and I think you did the better job! You photos still look REAL. :)

      @Cassi-
      You know, most HDR shots have that “look” – super saturated colors, really crisp edges and a surreal kind of look. Which for a special effect can be neat. However, I think the real creative possibility of HDR might more lie in being able to more closely match human vision and how our eye compensates for the highlights and shadows. An example from your link is “the Chase” – it looks natural enough that I could envision tthat’swwhatthe scene actually looked like.

    Great idea to use HDR photography for digital scrapbook layouts. I agree with you that HDR photography produces unusual and amazing textured photos that are perfect for use in scrapbooking.

    Keep up the good work.
