A good customer and friend of mine is expanding his photography business to do more senior photography. He does a lot right now but all of them come to his studio. He recently won a contract with a school about 3 hours away so he is exploring ways to do the high quality level he wants yet to do it quickly and efficiently while “on location” for a few days of shooting all of the kids. So I was getting nostalgic and just thinking about how senior photography has changed over the years.
Yup, this is my senior portrait. We were poor so I don’t remember even buying a senior picture which is why all I have is this yearbook scan. Loving the HUGE glasses and feathered hair. How wide can that shirt collar be?
This was a common look too. Every girl in our school had to wear a black drape for their senior picture – but we boys got to wear anything. Lots with T-shirts!
Eek! Heavily retouch and the “glamor” look – I’m sure this is not how she looked in her everyday life.
Now here’s a more modern one where the photographer has taken the time to get to know his subject and did a portrait that expresses their personality and uniqueness.
Location? We had no choice for our senior portraits. Sit on the stage on a stool – look this way. Now photographers often go out on location to really make the portrait extra special.
My kids were rolling with laughter when I started writing this post because of my picture – Becky even asked “who’s that?”. With senior photography season just starting up, get some portraits of your child if you get the chance. I would treasure having an actual portrait: to remember, to scrap, and to keep the kids in laughter! Leave us a comment on what you think or if you’re brave enough, scan or post a link to your senior picture!
