Foto Friday – Missing the View(finder)

deadcameraAs you may remember, our camera went into Mouse Creek (courtesy of the 14 year old).  At least she was trying to get a good shot, and just slipped on a rock.  She never got the shot, though all the pics on the card survived.  I took the camera apart and dried it out, put it back together, and it turned on!  last picture before disasterBut when I went to take a picture, the lens jammed and it’s hopeless.  Either the gears got knocked out of whack, or there’s a bit of grit in there jamming  them.  I tried to free them manually, but the lens motor is inaccessible in this model, so I couldn’t free it.

So now we’re in the market for a new point and shoot!  We don’t want to lug the big camera on vacation, so we thought we’d go look around.  We’ve done a lot of research online, looking at sites like snapsort.com so we had an idea what we wanted:

  • small but not too small
  • good quality lens
  • the special settings we use: macro, sports, self-timer
  • good optical zoom
  • decent sensor
  • view finder

We’ve had good luck with Canons before, so that was where we started looking.  We learned 2 very interesting things:

  • you can’t buy a point and shoot camera with a view finder.  Period.  Which is too bad.  I know that was sacrificed for space and cost, but it’s really very useful.  Using the viewfinder when you have it helps stabilize the camera for better photos, and often the screens are hard to see in the sun.  Not to mention using the screen sucks battery life.
  • they don’t include a camera card!  Not even a 512MB card!  Used to be you got a small card with it, but no longer.  So we shelled out $14 for a 4 Gig card, which ought to hold us.

newcameraWe ended up getting a Canon A495 point and shoot camera.  And it’s BLUE :)    It has a 10 megapixel sensor which is a little better than trying to cram 12MP onto a sensor, but I’d have been happier with an 8MP one.  But I think this will do.

We’ve taken a few photos with it so far, and I’m pretty pleased with the results!

Just look how happy everyone is with their cannoli!

So now we’re all set for vacation, and won’t miss a moment of our adventures!

What camera do you use to take the casual, fun pictures?

I like my Canon SD1100. It does have a viewfinder but I just realized that I never use it. Your little blue Canon is very cute. Enjoy!

I use the Cannon Power Shot A650 IS. It has a viewfinder and that’s why I got it! Those screens just don’t work in the sun and I have enough to handle taking my glasses on and off to get that perfect shot. But the viewfinder is rather limited and does not show as much as my DSLR camera which views through the lense.

Can’t agree more about the screen out in the sun. Having used the camera yesterday out in the sun it was “point and hope” instead of point and shoot!

We carry our ‘big’ Nikon D40X with us everywhere, even on vacation. It’s not really that big, and I make my husband carry the extra lens in a bag on his belt loop when we’re out & about. I’m so anal, I can never remember how to use the P&S cameras once I’ve been using the DSLR. So I miss too many shots switching back & forth. Dumb, I know.

I have the Nikon D60 but I am like you. It is too bulky to carry with me everywhere so I am wanting a new point and shoot maybe for Christmas. What is the zoom on your new Canon. Its very pretty!!

    • Stan

Zoom range is 3.3x – and it’s no where near enough. But it’s about what you will get for a simple p&s under $120. Given a better budget and time, we might have looked further and spent more to get a bigger zoom range.

I had a camera that was a little bulky for me (point and shoot) and have just gotten the SamsungHZ35W. I am still learning about but have been very happy with it so far.

I love my Canon!! It is a Powershot too, but about 4 years old now.. Problem I have is that the lens is scratched, by kids and lots of use.. Yep I know a lot of you will cringe at me.. Not much I can do, once it is done it is done.. Hoping to go buy a new one and yours appeals… Wish me luck at convincing the hubby!!

I only have the one camera… unless you wanna count my film camera. Haven’t used my film one since they did a recall on my digital one.

    Have a good time!

I only have a P&S. It’s a Nikon S600, and does pretty well. It’s not great for indoor photos, but outdoors, I can get just about anything.

I wanted to get a smaller camera to carry in my purse but at Thanksgiving 2008 my Olympus died. I got a Lumix DMC-FZ28 with a 10 mega pixels 18X optical zoom and 27mm wide lens. I absolutely LOVE it. I can take great video and then get stills from the video for those times when I can’t take pictures fast enough to get that good shot. It’s bigger than I originally wanted but I wouldn’t give it up now!!
