Journaling Reads: For several years after we were married, I made these ornaments and we went around to craft shows on the weekends and sold them. We had small ones and large ones; this was one of the most fancy ones! Under the bow it has a little music box that plays “Here comes the Bride”. I would customize them in person at the shows for people. Some weekends when we did two day shows we’d sell so much on Saturday that I’d have to stay up all night making more stuff to sell on Sunday so we could go back! We did pretty well with the shows, at least we made some extra fun money! The shows that didn’t go well, we usually made enough to cover our booth fees and order a pizza for dinner. Still, it was a lot of work to make all those ornaments and it took a lot of time. When Katie was born, I just didn’t have time to make them any more, not to mention it was hard to have all those little flowers and the hot glue gun out around a baby, so we quit. I still miss it sometimes. We met some really nice people that way. I got some wonderful things by trading ornaments with the other vendors, including my ceramic light-up Christmas tree! We always broke a few ornaments moving in or out of a show, which upset anyone who saw the breakage, but not me. It was sad when one of my favorites broke, but it just seemed like part of the cost of doing business! People always seemed genuinely thrilled with their purchases; we tried to keep the prices low so they were affordable. It was sometimes surprising which ornaments were hot sellers, often one that I really didn’t like (maybe an odd color combination or something) would be a huge hit! I’m glad I was able to make and preserve one just for us to have as a memento of the time we spent together “on the road”! |
