As a lot of us here in the US gather with family over this Thanksgiving holiday, there are sure to be a lot of pictures taken. It reminds me that digital scrapbookers and photographers often get too involved in the technical end of making a ‘”perfect” picture and forget about the moment. Why do we take pictures and then scrap them? Is it to show that we nailed the exposure with the brand new 50mm f1.2 autofocus lens on our 138 megapixels Fotophone DSLR? No – we take pictures to remember the good (and bad) times in our lives and the importance of these moments to us and our family and friends.
Here’s a perfect example
– this is our annual Thanksgiving picture where we do a big group picture right before we eat. While in past years they have turned out better, this year’s is kind of .. well… average. There’s lots of distractions in the background, there’s glass glare, and the lighting’s flat and unflattering. But – the memories and feelings it invokes in me are what is important:
- I’m gathered with those I love and treasure most – my wife, kids and dear friends.
- While we aren’t busting down the bank, we have enough money to provide for our needs and have a little extra left over.
- Scrappers Workshop is growing by leaps and bounds thanks to you, our scrapping family.
- We have food and shelter – which many don’t.
- This is likely that last Thanksgiving we’ll have with our friends as they are moving to Connecticut this summer, which is exciting and sad all rolled into one.
So this picture, just as I wrote about in One of the Most Valuable Things I Have, is priceless to me. Not for how good a picture it is, but how good a memory it is.
Guess I have to scrap it!
Thanks for listening and may you be as blessed as Jenn and I and our family.
