Quick Tip Tuesday – Does Everybody Have a Nametag?

Here’s a super-quick, super-useful tip for you PSE users!

You know how sometimes you get a style installed and can’t tell what it is from the thumbnail image?  Especially if you buy style sets from someone who doesn’t provide a preview image, or only provides a generic one.  But NAMESthere’s a quick way to make using these styles easier – the nametag!

In the Effects panel, click on the little menu thingy in the top right corner, and choose Show Names from the menu, and TA-DA!!  You can see a truncated version of the filename underneath the thumbnail!
NAMES2 This might make it a little easier to find what you want when you need it, without having to make and install a .png file!

Scrap Happy!

How can I show names in Photoshop. Can’t seem to find a menu

When you hover over the style it does show a name – just wish it would have the option to turn it on or off like PSE :)

So this leads to the question–How do you make a style preview? Sometimes the previews that Photoshop makes when you set up a new style (especially for shadows) is really non-helpful in seeing what things look like. So, can you make your own little preview? I’d love to be able to use a letter with a shadow for a preview, for example.

You’re right that PS generates those previews. In PSE where some things show in the Effects palette it is possible to put in a custom graphic, but that requires you to install the style, whereas in PS we usually just load the styles temporarily to use. When you install too many of these things it slows down the program tremendously.
What I suggest? Make your own custom style-sets. You can use the Preset Manager to make a new set with just your favorite styles from various sets. That way you don’t have to sift through a bunch of things that look similar. And if you don’t know how to do that, watch for next week’s QTT!!
