Ever have a photo like this? Background basically okay but subject too dark?
It’s easy to fix using either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (all versions). It’s kind of hidden but in Photoshop go to Image – Adjustments – Shadow/Highlights. In Elements, go to Enhance – Lighting – Shadows/Highlights. In Photoshop you get this menu:
Notice that the more you move the shadow amount slider to the right, the lighter the shadows (and only the shadows) will get. The more you move the highlight amount slider to the right, the darker only the highlights get. You can also adjust slightly the color correction and midtone contrast sliders although these usually look good where they are. I find this a little easier to use then curves and gets you about the same amount of control.
