Quick Tip Tuesday – Lovin’ those Layers!

Photoshop version 1 boxI’ve been using Adobe Photoshop for years – since version 2. I feel real comfortable with the software and am tickled when I can teach others what I know about the software and how to use it. I don’t claim to be some super Photoshop guru but I’m proud of what I know and am always happy to pass it along.

That’s why it is so COOL to learn something new! I found a great time saving shortcut today and wanted to share it. It’s been hiding under my nose and I could have used it so much in the past… (Elements users – this works for you too!)

Say you have a layout open and want to select just one type of layer – like the type layers – to change the font, styles, something. Kind of like this: (click to enlarge)

select-similar-layers

Now you could select the first type layer and then Ctrl click on each individual type layer. But what if you have dozens of layers all scattered thru out? it would be easy to miss one…

Select your first type layer and then go to Select -Similar layers:

Boom! Photoshop automatically selects just the type layers wherever they are in the stack! (click to enlarge)

Way easier than Ctrl-Clicking on them all!

I hope you enjoyed this quick tip. If you liked it or have suggestions for another, leave us a comment.

Till next week – Keep Scrappin’

PS – My two cents – and a bonus tip!!  This is GREAT to use to add dropshadows or other styles to your type:

Pick one layer, and set the layer styles the way you want them, go to Layers>Layer Styles>Copy Layer Style

Then go to Select>Similar Layers and watch all your text layers get selected…

Then go to Layers>Layer Styles>Paste Layer Style and ALL your layers have the same style!!

(I have custom keyboard shortcuts set up to do this, take our PS Tips and Tricks and you can learn how to do that too!)
