Quick Tip Tuesday – We want your Opinion

1272375890_Thumbs_Up

Jenn and I really want your opinion! We have an extensive collection of tutorials on general digital scrapbooking, Photoshop, and Elements. And a lot of you like a tutorial you can print out and have next to you as you try the tutorial. But they really take a lot of time to properly assemble the screen shots, examples, etc and write it up.

We have been experimenting with video tutorials. (See one at the end of this post.) We like them as they are a great extension of our teaching philosophy we use in our classes – you get to learn visually by seeing and hearing us teach you a tip or technique. But you can’t really easily try the tutorial and follow along – you have to keep switching back and forth between the video tutorial and your program – and that’s a little annoying. Bu they are a lot less time to get one together, so we could possibly do a lot more of them for you.

So we would like your opinion – vote below and let us know. Feel free to leave a comment if you want to give an explanation or expand on your vote. And thanks for letting us know!

I prefer written tutorials that I can easily refer back to . . . I find video tuts cumbersome because I am an advanced user and quite often it takes a long time to view a video tut to see that it is a technique I already know rather than a different approach to doing something that I already do.

If a technique is particularly tricky, though, is when I would want to view a video. For instance, the PS CS5 videos showing the new tools and techniques that are available on the net now are very valuable!

Linda, I’m with you. I can scan a written tut in a minute or two and see if it is something I can use, but it takes 5-10 minutes to watch a video only to find I don’t need it.

What I’m working toward is finding a way of embedding videos INTO written tuts, to show things where a written explanation is cumbersome. This is what we do in classes – explain then show. Ideally you could follow the written tut, then watch the VERY short videos to expand upon what you see. We’ll keep you posted!

I have to agree with this comment. I often am looking at tuts for process rather than exact click content, because I am often taking Photoshop tuts and figuring out how to do a similar process with GIMP. So, being about to “browse” a written tut is just easier and less tedious for me than watching a whole video. I think the embedding videos into written tuts would be fantastic AND a great time saver, since you could do a tut for one process and reuse it in many different cases. ;)

Oh, PLEASE do both. I have taken lessons before where there is a tutorial to print out and a video to watch.
Here’s what I love about videos. I have my video on one screen and my PSE on another screen. First I watch the whole video. Then I play it again, pauseing it to switch to my PSE screen to do what the video says. It is an awesome way to learn!!!

  • Tonia

Love the video tutorial but think is would be GREAT if Stan went through the tutorial singing the instructions.

  • Reno

If I had to choose one- it would be a video. But having both a written and a video would be perfect.

  • Toad Toed Princess

I really like both with video having an edge over written. I can copy the video from You Tube and refer to it as much as I like. This makes it super easy to follow as I work.

  • Shelia

I like both! I tend to be able to learn better from actually being able to see it done first! Then I like to have the tutorial printed to refer back too! If I had to choose one over the other though, it would be video…

I like videos as long as I can download them to my hard drive to work on when I am offline.

I love the video tutorials, I really need to see how something is done.But….
I need a hard copy to follow along. Since I’m so new and apparently not so bright when it comes to Learning elements, it’s takes too long to go back and watch the video to pinpoint what I need. In a perfect world I would love having both.

I totally agree with Linda. A written tut with ample screen shots really does the trick for me. BTW, just LOVE that tut on whitening eyes & teeth. Three methods, how cool is that! Perfectly done.

  • Jackie

Me again, I like the idea of downloading the video to have it to refer to any time but isn’t It a no no to copy from You Tube? I’ve often wondered about that.

you are actually right Jackie – all work on youtube is copyrighted and can not be downloaded for any reason, not even personal, unless you have the permission of the copyright holder or they release it under a Creative Commons or GPL license. Now, does it happen “illegally” – yeah, all the time. Do the copyright holders care? – well, depends. I know illegal mp3s/videos of musical acts are usually taken down fast as the music industry definitely cares. Jenn and I love giving back to the scrapbooking community so we would likely release ours under a license for free personal use. More to come later.

I have a laptop and a desktop so I don’t have problems with the video tutorials. I just put the laptop next to the desktop and on one I open photoshop and on the other the video tutorial. So I like the video tutorials

  • ewe scrap

I prefer the video and I take notes as I am watching it. Then I can put it in my own words and how I can remember it.
Sometimes, if a written tutorial is available, I will print it but I really hate to use so much ink. Thank you for asking. You do a great job either way!

  • Jaclyn

I actually like both, a written so I can refer back to it and video because I am a very visual person.

  • Terri

I like the written tutorials best. I have a hard time concentrating on the long tutorials and the written tutorials on your site are perfect for me.

As you stated an advantage to written is being able to print it for future reference as well as scan it quickly.

I like the video ‘cos some times it is just easier to see someone do it than try to figure out the written instructions. The bad thing is a lot of videos can’t be saved & also can be a pain because of having to restart & paused, etc.

I like the concept Jenn is talking about with combing the 2.

I do realize yawl need to do what is the easiest for yawl.

I still say you need to write a book.

    Thanks for asking us!

  • Beckygtx

I love the videos but find the written with screenshots easier to follow as I can work through steps easier.

  • Brandi

Yes, both. :) That doesn’t help, does it? Videos are nice but I like to have written steps to check off. It’s a pain to pause a video and start it again.

  • IvoryKeys

As much as I love video tutorials (because the visual really helps me “get it,” I need the written to truly process what I’ve seen. So I’m in the want both things camp. If I had to choose one over the other I would take the written because I eventually would figure it out. However the video really speeds the process along. :) Thanks for asking for our opinions. Jenn and Stan rock!

I like the written and usually print out. If you do both I don’t think you need the images… just specific directions. If you say they are for experienced users I think the clear directions w/o images will still do the trick. Again, thanks for all you do. If only one I agree with IvoryKeys and prefer it and the being able to download as a pdf.

I voted for both. When both are offered, I will print out the tut and then watch the video, making notes right on the tut to help make it clear for my muddled brain. I find the videos very helpful, watching the shortcuts you use are sometimes new to me. I find if you only write the shortcut, I have trouble finding it. Clicking on the thumbnail is a case in point – that was such a revelation when I first saw it used but I don’t think I would have “got it” if it had only been written. I agree you don’t need the screen prints if there is a video, too. Thank you so much for all you are doing – I just discovered your site recently! Keep it up!
